Get Your Home Cold-Weather Ready

It may not always feel like summer in San Francisco, but the dry weather makes this the perfect time to tackle home maintenance.

A few simple tasks now can help prevent costly repairs and keep things running smoothly as we head into fall.

Here’s a quick checklist to get started:
A hand in an orange glove is cleaning leaves from a gutter on a roof, with a background of tiles and a potted plant.
Clean out your
gutters

Remove leaves and debris to avoid water buildup and roof damage.

A technician in a blue shirt and red gloves is working on a machine, inspecting internal components.
Schedule a furnace
check-up

Make sure your heating system is working efficiently before the chill really sets in.

Seal cracks around windows and doors

Keep cold air out and warm air in by checking for drafts and sealing gaps.

Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

Ensure batteries are fresh and devices are working properly for safety.

Drain and store garden hoses

Check outdoor faucets and hoses for leaks or wear, and store any attachments you’re not using.

Fall Prep Checklist

✔️ Start with a Seasonal Cleanup
Remove clutter and yard waste, and give gutters and walkways a once-over.

✔️ Tackle Quick Fixes and Maintenance
Take care of minor repairs before they become more costly to address.

✔️ Schedule Check-ups
Have your heating and ventilation systems inspected, and replace air conditioning and other filters as needed.

✔️ Freshen Up the Exterior
Take advantage of the dry weather to tackle any exterior painting or staining that needs attention.

✔️ Assess Your Roof
When was the last time your roof was replaced? If it’s nearing the end of its lifespan, it might be worth considering a proactive replacement before it becomes an urgent one.

✔️Inspect for Pests and Dry Rot
If it’s been a while, consider having a professional check for signs of pests or dry rot while the weather is still cooperative.
